Groundwork Greater Nottingham is a registered charitable trust and company limited by guarantee. It is part of the Groundwork Federation of over fifty trusts located in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We are committed to improving the quality of life for local people in disadvantaged areas. We consult and work closely with local people to achieve sustainable improvements to local areas. To build sustainable communities we aim to enable an integrated and community led approach to local regeneration, to use environmental improvement as a means of achieving social and economic change and to help individuals and organisations contribute to sustainable development. In working towards these objectives and ultimately ISO14001 certification, the Trust endeavours to prevent pollution and to meet, or surpass, all relevant legislative and other requirements to which the Trust subscribes to ensure the protection of its employees, the community at large and the environment.

The Trust is now in its second year of operating to British Standard BS8555 for environmental management systems.  The Trust aims to minimise the consumption of resources, atmospheric emissions and waste sent to landfill. The Trust follows good environmental practice on purchasing, energy use, transport and waste management.

Between April 2005 and March 2008 we reduced our carbon emissions by 7 tonnes (7tCO2e) or 22.6%, by reducing gas and electricity consumption.  In 2007/8 we improved access to public transport information, put in place a fleet of staff bicycles, eliminated all substances at our offices requiring safety data sheets, we increased our recycling rates by 22% and removed all water coolers.  Environmental training is provided to all staff and approved suppliers are required to adhere to our Environmental Standards for Contractors.

New and revised objectives and targets have been set for 2008:

  • Reduce carbon emissions from energy consumption and business travel, through awareness raising and switching to 100% Green Energy for electricity, by December 2008.
  • Reduce office paper consumption by 35% by December 2008.
  • Reduce the environmental impact of using landscape projects materials by August 2008.
  • Continue to reduce the impact of solid waste production from on site activities by implementing three waste saving initiatives by December 2008.
  • Continue to reduce the environmental impact associated with the use of contractors by ensuring that all contractors are working to the Trust’s environmental standards by December 2008.
  • Remove all water coolers and replace with a filtered tap to reduce energy consumption & waste production by December 2007.

This Policy encompasses the environmental policy objectives of Groundwork UK and has the support of the Board, staff and volunteers of the Trust and is communicated to all interested stakeholders and contractors. The Executive Director is responsible for implementing this Policy and communicating it to each employee. This Policy is subject to regular review to ensure that it continues to reflect the aims of the Trust and promotes continuous environmental improvement throughout the Trust’s operations.
