Food is an essential part of our lives and whilst many people are not aware, the food choices we make have a direct impact on both our health and our environment.
From a health perspective the diet we eat will affect our chances of early death from cancer or coronary vascular disease.
Where our food is grown, how far it travels, how it is grown, processed and packaged all affect our global and local environment. Our food system has a significant impact on our environmental footprint and consequently is a big contributor to climate change.
From government level down, there are now pressures and constant awareness raising to encourage people not only to eat more healthily but to think more carefully about where their food comes from. See our Sustainable Food page.
FIG’s strategy is aimed primarily at the health service, local authorities, the food and farming industry and the voluntary and community sector in Greater Nottingham, but it will hopefully be useful to anyone with an interest in food.
Food for Thought brings together local economic, environmental, cultural, food safety, social and health issues. It contains recommendations that when put into practice will help improve our food, health and environment.
