RELEASE DATE 18 September 2006
TITLE PATHWAY TO PLAY

Improvement work has started this week at St Anns play centre in Nottingham. Local regeneration charity, Groundwork Greater Nottingham is managing a project to improve the grounds of the inner city playcentre. This week now marks the start of big changes planned for the grounds; big, literally as the later stages of the improvements are being funded by the BIG Lottery Fund! This phase however, is being funded by BIFFA through the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

The immediate works include constructing a footpath, linking the lower part of the site to the top of the site, a new gate and some minor regrading. However, all this paves the way for new play equipment, which will be in place by Christmas.

The project has received much media focus during recent months. During the summer the Community Channel filmed at the centre; for a programme called Your Space or Mine which was recently broadcast on the 15th September. The programme featured Tommy Walsh from the BBC’s Ground Force programme, who was the link man on several projects featured in the programme. The centre was also featured earlier this year on GMTV as part of Groundworks’ overall bid to the Peoples Millions BIG Lottery programme.

There has been a group working on this for over a year and it is thanks to the hard work of this group that the funding has been achieved; in particular thanks are due to the City Councils’ Play Service and Parks Department together with everyone at the centre.

Children who use the centre now want to see some changes actually happen; they have waited some time to see this. Chryse Tinsley from Groundwork said; "It’s taken a while to get all the funding in place, but thanks to BIFFA and to the BIG lottery fund changes are happening."

The current works will cost just over £14,000; the complete project is worth over £100,000.
