RELEASE DATE 19 October 2005
TITLE GREEN CAR PROJECT CUTS FIRST TURF

On Thursday 20th October at 2.30 the first turf will be cut for a new project at Highbank Primary and Nursery School. Work has been taking place at the school to understand some of the cultures of the countries within the European Economic community; focusing particularly in Czech Republic and Poland. Children at Highbank have been finding out about polish paper cutting, the Polka, Czech folk stories and forms of art. They have also been working out a size for an outdoor classroom

Work starts on the outdoor classroom in November. This will provide a quiet space but also a space for performance to help the children in their learning and play.

Toyota is sponsoring the project as a part of their schools for sustainable development programme. Gary Harlock Regional Training Manager for the Toyota Academy said – ‘its great to be involved with a project that will have such an impact on the school and it’s pupils, I am particularly pleased that the pupils at Highbank have been involved with the project design and look forward to seeing their first outdoor performance.’ Headteacher Steve Parry said ‘Opportunities to work in partnership with businesses like Toyota enable us to provide something beyond what we can provide alone. This project gives the children at Highbank a special place to extend their learning and play. These partnerships also heighten the aspirations of our children by opening up their vision of the wider world’

Groundwork Greater Nottingham’s landscape architect Chryse Tinsley said it has been really fun working with the children and I am now looking forward to the constructing of the outdoor classroom; which will provide a focus of interest in the school grounds. We are planning some tree planting as well this winter to beautify the landscape and help the children to understand the natural world around them.
