Local charity, Groundwork Greater Nottingham is working on
a new project to promote healthy eating in three primary schools.
Newstead Primary, Melbury Primary and Unity Primary school
have been chosen to take part in the project funded by the
Health Initiatives Budget.
The school children have been discovering more about where
our food comes from, why we should eat more healthily and
the impact that our food choices have on the environment.
Not only have they been taking part in activities within school
but they have also been given the opportunity to visit Hungary
Lane Farm in Sutton Bonnington.
Jude Bagguley, Project Co-ordinator at Groundwork said, "The
children are delighted to have the opportunity to visit a
local farm. Many of them have never had the chance to find
out what goes on on a farm and were keen to learn all about
the animals that the farmers rear and the crops that they
grow. Educationally the visits are fantastic as they encourage
the children to think about where their food originates."
With healthy eating and food choices becoming a popular subject
for schools following the Jamie Oliver campaign to improve
school meals, following their day at the farm the children
will be tickling their tastebuds. With the help of FIG (the
Food Initiatives Groups they will be trying smoothies and
healthy snack choices as they learn more about making the
right choice to stay healthy.
