TITLE Local Children Go HOPIN Mad

What : Free celebration event

When: Wednesday 19th April 11am to 3pm

Where: The Museum of Nottingham Life, Brewhouse Yard on Castle Boulevard in Nottingham

Everybody is invited to come and learn about the Heritage of Play.

Local school children have been researching traditional games and aspects of play for the past year, including exploring traditional games from the UK and in countries across the world. To celebrate their achievements, they would like to share their findings.

The event, organised by Groundwork Greater Nottingham, is part of the project which was designed to help children think about history in a way that is relevant to them as well as sharing the cultures of other children.

Commenting, Tabitha Luddem, Education Project Officer at Groundwork Greater Nottingham said, "The project has worked with school children at different schools across Nottingham to look at play from the past and present, play from other countries and also to develop games for the future. It is hoped that through looking into these topics, children will gain a better understanding of the heritage of the areas in which they live, the cultures of other children and stimulate their minds by developing new games that they can play both in the classroom and outside. The added benefit of the project to the children is that they can try the games."

The project entitled Heritage of Play in Nottingham (HOPIN) was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Explaining the importance of the project, HLF’s Jeremy Fenn said, “This is yet another example of what the younger generation can achieve given the opportunity, and how the exploration of their heritage has enabled these young people to develop a greater sense of identity, and an appreciation of the diversity and breadth of their heritage. This event will let them share their new found knowledge with a wider audience.”

The success of the project, and recognition of this idea was recently reinforced when representatives from the cities of Linköping and Atvidaberg in Sweden where shown the project on a recent visit by Groundwork Greater Nottingham to show the respective councils the work of Groundwork in Greater Nottingham. They decided to attempt to find funding to enable them to replicate it in their own communities.
