RELEASE DATE 26 February 2007
TITLE CLIFTON SHOPPERS EXPERIENCE THE WORK OF LOCAL TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS

Most local residents and users would agree that the Varney Road shopping area in Clifton near Nottingham has long been in need of some improvements. This month will see those improvements start to happen thanks to the hard work of Farnborough School's technology students, with the help of local regeneration charity, Groundwork Greater Nottingham and support from Nottingham City Council.

Using initial funding from Toyota as part of its Schools for Sustainable Development Programme, the students worked with staff from Groundwork Greater Nottingham to put together a wish list of improvements for the area. Officers from Nottingham City Council then brought together funding from 21st Century Towns, Area Capital Fund, and Neighbourhood Services to enable the works to go ahead.

The result of this cooperation is that the area will be repaved, with new benches, bins and trees installed to create a modern, green shopping area. Artist Nathan Bainbridge is also working with Farnborough School's year 9 students to create a large-scale artwork showing local scenes that will be installed on the Co-op building opposite Dovecote school.

The scheme was particularly commended by Councillors Tim Spencer and Chris Gibson, who commented: “It’s so refreshing to see what can be achieved for our communities through working together”
