RELEASE DATE 28 March 2006
TITLE Help Bring the Peoples Millions to Nottingham

A local charity is urging the people of Nottingham to add their support to a bid for Lottery funding to bring valuable new facilities into the area.

Groundwork is one of three charities in with a chance of securing £1.5 million from The People’s Millions in a contest launched by The Big Lottery Fund and GMTV aimed at giving the public a real say over where Lottery funding is invested.

Viewers of GMTV will decide where the money goes in a public vote which will take place during the week of 3 April and Groundwork is appealing to local residents to get behind their campaign.

Groundwork’s proposal – entitled Safe & Sound - will see the £1.5 million divided among 25 projects across England, Wales and Northern Ireland aimed at helping young people and adults work together to turn local eyesores into safe and attractive spaces.

If the bid is successful, Groundwork Greater Nottingham will be working with partners to create a new play area behind St Anns Play Centre. The area of land where the propsed improvements will take place will provide play opportunities for a range of different age groups.

Zbig Szulc, executive director of Groundwork Greater Nottingham says “All of the projects Groundwork delivers are designed to meet the needs and demands of local people in the areas that we support. The People’s Millions contest provides an opportunity for us all to register how important these new facilities are to improving the quality of life in Nottingham.

“Safe & Sound is all about getting people from different generations to understand each other’s point of view and work together to improve the environment we all share and create valuable facilities in areas that need some investment.

“Not all young people are hoodie-wearing yobs and not all adults think children should be seen and not heard. We want to break down some of the myths and stereotypes that exist and demonstrate that we’re all trying to achieve the same thing – a clean, safe and green local environment that makes us feel good about where we live.”

Groundwork’s Safe & Sound proposal will be showcased on GMTV during the week of 3 April with viewers able to make their views count through phone, text and online voting.
